My story
Being a freelance ghostwriter and editor is my dream job. It is always a privilege to collaborate with someone on a writing project they are passionate about.
I have loved books and writing ever since I can remember. So much so that I became an English academic and have worked in some of the best universities in the country.
Something that I loved doing during my doctoral research was workshopping writing with other students and staff. A bunch of us would get together in a group and someone would share a draft of a journal article or book chapter that they were writing. The rest of the group would then critique it (as sensitively as possible) and work through the various ways it could be improved with the writer. I think I learned more from those weekly 2-hour workshops than from any other part of my PhD.
So, when I decided to move on from academia, I re-trained as an editor and began helping others with their writing. I have worked with all sorts of experts in many different subjects (including rocket science, cyber security, business economics and marketing) and at universities around the world, from London to Melbourne, Cambridge to Aukland.
As well as an editor, I am an author myself and have published a successful biography of the writer J.A. Baker. I also commissioned and co-edited a collection of new nature writing with Dr Jos Smith at the University of East Anglia.
Other jobs I have had include county show car-park steward, stage manager to a flock of sheep performing Shakespeare, and second-hand bookseller (working in a bookshop is not half as romantic as people think, though it is the source of many a good dinner-party story).
